Synopsis

All’s Well That Ends Well is a documentary following Yujie Li, a young gay man from China navigating the collision between his queer identity and the expectations of his traditional family. After coming out to his parents, Yujie is given an ultimatum: marry a woman and have children, or risk losing both his family ties and the financial support promised for his graduate education in San Francisco. Determined to preserve his relationship with his family without abandoning his authentic self, he chooses an unconventional compromise—a lavender marriage. The film follows the emotional and practical journey leading to a 350-person wedding in Zhangzhou, China, while examining the deeper forces behind it: filial duty, marriage, generational expectations, and the increasingly constrained space available to LGBTQ+ people in contemporary China. Through an intimate family story, All’s Well That Ends Well asks a larger question: How much of ourselves are we willing to compromise in order to remain connected to the people we love?
